Pregnant Chihuahua

Caring for your pregnant chihuahua is very important, you have to take good care of her because now she is more fragile than usual. She needs a lots of vitamin and nutrition for her puppies and for her milk. You need to prepare for her and her puppies. Note to you: always make sure that the daddy is the same size or smaller than then the mama chihuahua. Also when you suspected your chihuahua is pregnant de-worm her immediately because worms can cause death in new born puppies, you cannot de-worm baby chihuahua until 3 weeks old.

Food

Food that your chihuahua needs during her pregnancy, she can eat all the basic meat. She will need EXTRA PROTEIN in her diet.  Witch includes pork, chicken, fish, lamb, beef, and dry dog food mixed with wet dog food. Now remember each chihuahua has it's own sensitive stomach, so please be aware of their stomach. No fryed meats, boiled or steamed is best, also No ground animal meal. You might even want to try a RAW FOOD DIET with your Chihuahua. You can check out the source page for Raw food diet websites.

If you live in an area with a lot of ticks you can also add about a 1/4teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to her food or water and this will help. Ticks and fleas do not like acidic blood.

**1.  During Pregnancy we gave Cocoa a mix of different sources for high protein, this yummy dinner had high quality dog food,  boiled chicken ,gizzards and raw chicken wings.

Love and Care

You must choose a boy that is smaller or the same size as your female chihuahua.  Make sure that you give your chihuahua lots of love and care. She will be a lot more sensitive than normal so try to keep a quiet environment for her. You can still groom her but you have to be very gentle with her. Look for ticks on her body it's very important that you get as much ticks off as possible. Don't wash your pregnant chihuahua just wipe her down with a wet cloth instead, you want to decrease stress as mush as possible. Often pet and love your chihuahua she needs as much love as possible.

Possible Vet Expenses

De-worm your Mother Chihuahua after breeding her or as soon as you suspect she is pregnant. Make sure you are prepared for possible vet expenses. Like C-section, and vaccination for your puppies. On the puppies first year they need a lot of shots, 3weeks de-worming,  6 weeks is when they get their first shots. some of the vaccinations are for rabies, Distemper, parvo,   and parainfluenza.

Birth

Your Momma Chihuahua will delivery her puppies in 58-66 days after tying acures.  What you need when your chihuahua has puppies, you need a crate or box filled up with newspaper, cloths, or cut up towels. That is where your chihuahua will have her puppies. Make your box 2 weeks ahead of time, so she can get used to it and become comfortable with the box.  Remember if you use a cardboard box and cut a door out make sure when you cut the door out it's high enough so the puppies can't jump out. Now time for the birthing steps.

Step 1. Temperature drops about 1 degree. Puppies will arrive within 24 hours.

Step 2. water breaks.

Step 3. puppies every 30 minutes. Your chihuahua will typically break the membrane over each puppy and sever the umbilical cord herself although in rare cases you may need to step in.

Step 4. last placenta comes out, and the mother eats it.

Step 5. longer than 1 hour between puppies call vet.

We live in Bali and are very lucky to be able to call our Vet for a home delivery.   Since this was going to be Cocoa's first birth and mine. We called out Vet when Cocoa went into Labor and he arrived before the 3rd puppy, Cocoa had 5 puppies.

Danger Signs in Birth

The 4 danger signs

#1 Your chihuahua has been pregnant 70 days and has yet to give birth

#2 24 hours has past since her temperature dropped below 100degrees F but has not entered labor

#3 1 puppy has been born but over 2 hours has past without any other puppies/placenta coming out

#4 your chihuahua experiences significant pain during birth

If your chihuahua experiences any of these dangers you should call your vet immediately.

** In our case we called our Vet and he came to our house right before puppy #3 came out.  We are

fortunate to have done this because puppy #5's sack was already broke before she came out.  So the Vet had to help her come out and the Placenta was broken inside of Cocoa. Which the Vet then helped to make sure all pieces of the placenta were removed.
