How to take care of your pregnant Chihuahua and her puppies

Caring for your Chihuahua puppy or puppies is super important. They need special needs, that you need to fill.

Food
What kind food do you need for your puppies, the mom will provide all the food for your pups until 1 month. That's when you need to pitch in, they still will drink their mothers milk. But that's when you start trying to give them wet puppy food or gruel. By the time they are 6-8 weeks old they should be weaned and eating dry dog food. In my case my chihuahua had 5 puppies, 3 of them big and 2 of them small. Because two of them were so small they could not drink the milk by themselves, so every two hours I had to help them get on Cocoa's nipple. If your puppy is too small then you need to help your puppy every 2 hours to get on the nipple. Also if your puppy will not drink the mothers milk put the the puppy right to the nipple , squeeze out some milk and stroke under chin of puppy to bottom of neck, back and forth.

Love and care
At the moment your puppy or puppies do not need any grooming, playing, or washing/bathing. Your mom chihuahua will lick your puppy for bathing and grooming. But soon enough you will be able to play with your little friend. You need to clean the box or crate that your puppy sleeps in, twice everyday. To make sure no diseases get in the poop, witch then the puppies gets into. A chihuahua puppy can not see or hear for about 10-14 days.
**Always inspect your little puppy daily when weighting ,looking for any problems. For example our puppies starting having little bumps/blister looking things on belly,under chin, and on knees. They were clear then sometimes a greenish whitish color. Our Vet recommend to apply Betadine to the bumps. The vet said it was either a bacterial infection or skin irritation. This is due to milk and urine getting on the puppy , it is normal and the puppies skin will adjust to it depending on their antibodies. The Betadine is helping and the bumps are going away.
Weighing
You have to weigh your puppy chihuahua everyday the same time. The first day your puppy will lose weight or stay the same weight as the first day they were born. By the first week they should double their weight plus or minus 1 ounce (28grams). see sources for a puppy growth chart.
Warmth
It's very important that your puppies are super warm, because they cannot generate their own heat for 2 weeks.
Do not make your puppy box by a window or draft. So make sure to cover your puppy box with newspaper,towels,and blankets. Also it is good to use a lamp with heat bulb about 5ft over top of puppy box. You can also use a heating pad covered with towel at the bottom of your box if you live in a cold place.

*Puppies can not go to the bathroom on their own and must rely on their mother to lick their private parts, which stimulates them to go bathroom.
*The puppies Umbilical cord will come off in 1-2 days all by itself.
*Puppies can not generate their own body temperature for 2 weeks
